Preface Fortune is arranging matters for us better than we could have shaped our desires ourselves, for look there, friend Sancho Panza, where thirty or more monstrous giants present themselves, all of whom I mean to engage in battle and slay, and with whose spoils we shall begin to make our fortunes; for this is righteous warfare, and it is God's good service to sweep so evil a breed from off the face of the earth [13].-Don Quixote about windmills The made-up history written in 1605 repeats itself nowadays. However , in contrast to delusions of Don Quixote 1 , modern wind turbines present the real challenge for the radar industry. In comparison with more than century history of radars, wind turbines have appeared relatively not long ago. In terms of the radar, wind turbines differ from known nature and human made objects. They can be as big as an Airbus A380, the velocity of their blades could be compared with an aircraft speed. It leads to the new problem for the radar detection and tracking. It concerns the majority of radars-civil and military, surface and airborne, 2D and 3D. Wind farms can have hundreds of wind turbines. One wind farm can cover a few square kilometres. Each part, each turbine makes the signal, which interfere with the radar. Although wind farms are, evidently, stationary, they influence the filters, e.g. Kalman filter, and do not let track an airplane. It is not easy to recognise the target even for a human as well. The operator observes the same signals from turbines. In fact, this problem concerns the security and safety. Difficulties for military radars threaten the national …

A quantitative analysis of the impact of wind turbines on operational Doppler weather radar data
In many countries wind turbines are rapidly growing in numbers as the demand for energy from renewable sources increases. The continued deployment of wind turbines can, however, be problematic for many radar systems, which are easily disturbed by turbines located in the radar line of sight. Wind turbines situated in the vicinity of Doppler weather radars can lead to erroneous precipitation esti...
متن کاملMitigation Techniques to Reduce the Impact of Wind Turbines on Radar Services
Radar services are occasionally affected by wind farms. This paper presents a comprehensive description of the effects that a wind farm may cause on the different radar services, and it compiles a review of the recent research results regarding the mitigation techniques to minimize this impact. Mitigation techniques to be applied at the wind farm and on the radar systems are described. The deve...
متن کاملIdentification and assessment of training needs for employees of wind farms
In this paper, the training needs of wind farm employees have been specified, assessed and prioritized. For this purpose, first of all, the main tasks of wind farm employees have been identified. Afterwards, four criteria—including task complexity, task importance, task time duration and task frequency—have been considered to assess and prioritize tasks. In this respect, the Analytic Hierar...
متن کاملReliability Assessment of Power Generation Systems in Presence of Wind Farms Using Fuzzy Logic Method
A wind farm is a collection of wind turbines built in an area to provide electricity. Wind power is a renewable energy resource and an alternative to non-renewable fossil fuels. In this paper impact of wind farms in power system reliability is investigate and a new procedure for reliability assessment of wind farms in HL1 level is proposed. In proposed procedure, application of Fuzzy – Markov f...
متن کاملSimplified Formulae for the Estimation of Offshore Wind Turbines Clutter on Marine Radars
The potential impact that offshore wind farms may cause on nearby marine radars should be considered before the wind farm is installed. Strong radar echoes from the turbines may degrade radars' detection capability in the area around the wind farm. Although conventional computational methods provide accurate results of scattering by wind turbines, they are not directly implementable in software...
متن کاملStochastic Assessment of the Renewable–Based Multiple Energy System in the Presence of Thermal Energy Market and Demand Response Program
The impact of different energy storages on power systems has become more important due to the development of energy storage technologies. This paper optimizes the stochastic scheduling of a wind-based multiple energy system (MES) and evaluates the operation of the proposed system in combination with electrical and thermal demand-response programs and the three-mode CAES (TM-CAES) unit. The prop...
